Max Park and the Van de Graaff Generator Posted Tuesday, April 16, 2013 05:43 PM This goes back to junior-high days. Who was in the classroom the day that Mr. Park, junior-high science teacher, introduced us to the Van de Graaff generator? Van de Graaff generators can generate in the neighborhood of 100,000 volts but discharges from the generator are not dangerous because the currents attainable are so small. You will remember that the electrical field causes hair to stand on end as was demonstrated by a young lady in the class. Mr. Park used a wand to demonstrate the length of sparks that could jump from the metal sphere to the wand. Unfortunately he leaned a little to close and a twelve inch spark jumped to his nose causing him to fall back a few feet. No harm, just scared the bejesus out of him. Who was there? Charlie Nelson |
